Tennis Elbow and Golfer's Elbow

Both of these conditions involve pain over the elbow joint but differ slightly in their position.

Tennis elbow is usually related in tennis players to a poor grip technique whilst playing backhand strokes. It can however occur in all sorts of people for all sorts of reasons. For instance in workmen using screwdrivers and/or hammers a lot.

Golfer’s elbow is generally related to a golfer striking the ground repeatedly as he tries to strike the ball. It can also be common in throwers such as in Javelin or in cricket.

Which is Which?

If you stand with your arms down by your side with the palms facing forward and the pain is on the outside of the bony prominent bit in the middle you have tennis elbow. If the pain is on the inside then it is golfer’s elbow.

Both these problems are the result of muscle tightness in the muscles of the forearm, and being muscular are generally easily resolved with sports massage. And usually prevented from returning with stretching and some technique or equipment modification.
